Rights and responsibilities
As a tenant of a housing association, both you and your landlord have certain rights and responsibilities. Some of the key points to remember are identified below:
Your tenancy agreement – the main document setting out the rights and responsibilities of you and your landlord is your ‘tenancy agreement’. You will be asked to sign this before you become a tenant. Make sure you read it carefully and ask your landlord – or an independent advisor – to explain anything you don’t understand.
Your tenants handbook – some housing associations will provide you with a handbook which clearly sets out your rights and responsibilities. Check with your association whether this is available.
Getting advice – for details of organisations which can help advise you on your rights and responsibilities, please click

A good starting point might be the independent Housing Information and Advice Service.
This service can provide you with more detailed information on the housing options available to you.
