Rents and deposits

Rents
Rent charges vary considerably: generally ranging from £70 to £120 per week.

In the Cowal area for example, the smaller sized, single person’s accommodation might start from around £70 per week. Larger, 4 or 5 bedroom properties can go for £100 to £250 per week, or more.

Deposits
You will normally be required to pay a deposit as well as your first month's rent in advance. A deposit must never be more than one sixth of the annual rent. However, it normally tends to be the same amount as one month's rent.

The deposit is money paid to a landlord (or accommodation agency) at the beginning of a tenancy. It acts as security against things like rent arrears, damage to property or removal of furniture by a tenant.

Providing that you have accrued no rent arrears at the end of your tenancy and the accommodation is in the same condition as you found it, you should have your deposit returned to you in full.

Argyll and Bute Council run a rent deposit scheme which helps some people who have difficulty paying a deposit. Click here for more information.
